Aim

To study properties of acids and bases: action on litmus, zinc metal, and sodium carbonate.

Materials Required

Dilute HCl
Dilute NaOH
Zinc granules
Sodium carbonate
Litmus paper (red & blue)
Test tubes
Lime water

Procedure

  1. Action on Litmus: Place drops of given solutions (HCl, NaOH) on red and blue litmus paper and observe the color change.
  2. Action on Zinc metal: Take zinc granules in a test tube. Add dilute HCl or NaOH. Observe the evolution of gas. Bring a burning matchstick near the mouth of the test tube.
  3. Action on Sodium carbonate: Take sodium carbonate in a test tube. Add dilute HCl. Pass the evolved gas through freshly prepared lime water.

Precautions

  • Handle acids and bases carefully as they are corrosive.
  • Use dilute solutions for the experiments.
  • Do not taste or touch the chemicals with bare hands.
  • Perform gas evolution tests carefully and do not inhale the gases directly.

Lab Report

Aim: To study properties of acids and bases: action on litmus, zinc metal, and sodium carbonate.

Result: Acids turn blue litmus red, react with Zn to produce H₂, and with Na₂CO₃ to produce CO₂. Bases turn red litmus blue.
