Materials Required
Dilute HCl
Dilute NaOH
Zinc granules
Sodium carbonate
Litmus paper (red & blue)
Test tubes
Lime water
Procedure
Action on Litmus: Place drops of given solutions (HCl, NaOH) on red and blue litmus paper and observe the color change.
Action on Zinc metal: Take zinc granules in a test tube. Add dilute HCl or NaOH. Observe the evolution of gas. Bring a burning matchstick near the mouth of the test tube.
Action on Sodium carbonate: Take sodium carbonate in a test tube. Add dilute HCl. Pass the evolved gas through freshly prepared lime water.
Precautions
Handle acids and bases carefully as they are corrosive.
Use dilute solutions for the experiments.
Do not taste or touch the chemicals with bare hands.
Perform gas evolution tests carefully and do not inhale the gases directly.
