Aim

To observe and study combination, decomposition, displacement, and double displacement reactions and write balanced chemical equations.

Materials Required

Quicklime (CaO) & Water
Ferrous sulphate crystals
Iron nails & Copper sulphate solution
Sodium sulphate & Barium chloride solutions
Bunsen burner & Beakers
Test tubes

Procedure

  1. Combination Reaction: Add a small amount of calcium oxide (quicklime) to water in a beaker. Touch the beaker and observe the change in temperature.
  2. Decomposition Reaction: Take about 2g ferrous sulphate crystals in a dry boiling tube. Note the color of the crystals. Heat the boiling tube over the flame of a burner and observe the changes.
  3. Displacement Reaction: Clean an iron nail with sandpaper. Dip it in a test tube containing copper sulphate solution. Observe the color change of the solution and the nail after a few minutes.
  4. Double Displacement Reaction: Take about 3 mL of sodium sulphate solution in a test tube. In another test tube, take about 3 mL of barium chloride solution. Mix the two solutions and observe.

Precautions

  • Handle chemicals carefully.
  • Heat test tube gently at first and point the mouth away from yourself and others.
  • Do not touch quicklime with bare hands as the reaction is highly exothermic.
  • Dispose of chemicals properly.
