pH Testing with Indicators

Aim

To find the pH of the following samples by using pH paper/universal indicator: dilute HCl, dilute NaOH, ethanoic acid, lemon juice, water, and dilute sodium bicarbonate solution.

Materials Required

pH Paper / Universal Indicator
Test Tubes
Test Tube Stand
Dropper
Solution Samples

Procedure

  1. Take a small strip of pH paper.
  2. Put a drop of the solution on it OR dip it in the solution.
  3. Observe the color change on the pH paper.
  4. Compare the color with the standard universal pH color chart.
  5. Record the pH value corresponding to the matched color.
  6. Classify the nature of the solution as acidic (pH < 7), neutral (pH = 7), or basic (pH > 7).
  7. Repeat the process for all provided solutions.

Precautions

Drag the Universal Indicator dropper or click on a test tube to test its pH.

Select a solution or drag the dropper to test pH.

Conclusion

Based on the pH values, HCl and lemon juice are strongly acidic, ethanoic acid is weakly acidic, water is neutral, sodium bicarbonate is weakly basic, and NaOH is strongly basic.
