Aim

To observe the combination reaction of calcium oxide (quick lime) with water.

Materials Required

Calcium oxide (Quick lime)
Beaker
Water
Thermometer
Glass stirrer

Theory

Calcium oxide reacts vigorously with water to produce slaked lime (calcium hydroxide), releasing a large amount of heat. This is an example of an exothermic combination reaction.

Chemical Equation:
CaO (s) + H₂O (l) → Ca(OH)₂ (aq) + Heat

The solution formed is alkaline in nature (basic) and turns red litmus paper blue.

Procedure

  1. Take a small amount of calcium oxide or quick lime in a beaker.
  2. Slowly add water to this.
  3. Touch the beaker or use a thermometer to observe the temperature change.
  4. Observe the vigorous bubbling and hissing sound as slaked lime is formed.
  5. Let the mixture settle and test the clear solution with red litmus paper.
