Reactivity Series of Metals

Chemistry Hard

Aim

To observe the action of Zn, Fe, Cu, and Al metals on salt solutions and arrange in decreasing order of reactivity.

Materials Required

Zinc, Iron, Copper, Aluminium strips/granules
ZnSO₄, FeSO₄, CuSO₄, Al₂(SO₄)₃ solutions
Test tubes

Procedure

  1. Take 4 test tubes containing ZnSO₄, FeSO₄, CuSO₄, and Al₂(SO₄)₃ solutions respectively.
  2. Add a piece of metal (e.g., Zinc) to each test tube.
  3. Observe if any reaction takes place (color change, deposit on metal).
  4. Repeat the process with other metals (Fe, Cu, Al).
  5. Record the observations and determine the reactivity order.

Precautions

Reactivity Order: Al > Zn > Fe > Cu
S.No. Metal Salt Solution Observation Reaction (Yes/No)

1. Most reactive metal among these is:

2. Cu does not displace any metal because:

3. Fe + CuSO₄ → FeSO₄ + Cu, solution changes from:

4. A more reactive metal ___ a less reactive metal from its salt solution:

5. Correct reactivity order:
