Cleaning Capacity of Soap in Hard and Soft Water

Aim

To study the comparative cleaning capacity of soap in soft and hard water.

Materials Required

Soap solution
Distilled water (soft)
Tap water with dissolved Ca/Mg salts (hard)
Test tubes / Beakers

Procedure

  1. Take two beakers and label them 'Soft Water' and 'Hard Water'.
  2. Pour equal amounts of soft water and hard water into the respective beakers.
  3. Add the same measured amount of soap solution to both beakers.
  4. Shake both beakers vigorously for the same amount of time.
  5. Observe the formation of lather (foam) and any white precipitate (scum) in the beakers.

Precautions

  • Use exactly the same amount of soap solution for a fair comparison.
  • Shake both samples with the same intensity and for the same duration.
  • Ensure the hard water contains sufficient dissolved calcium or magnesium salts.

Lab Report

Aim: To study the comparative cleaning capacity of soap in soft and hard water.

Result: Soap forms more lather and cleans better in soft water. In hard water, soap reacts with calcium/magnesium salts to form an insoluble precipitate called scum, reducing its cleaning efficiency.
