Image Formation by Concave Mirror

Aim

To determine the focal length of a concave mirror by obtaining the image of a distant object and observing image formation at different object distances.

Materials Required

Concave mirror
Screen
Mirror holder
Scale
Candle/Object

Procedure

  1. Mount the concave mirror on the mirror holder.
  2. Place the object (candle) at different distances (u) in front of the mirror along the principal axis.
  3. Move the screen to find a sharp image of the object.
  4. Record the object distance (u) and image distance (v).
  5. Observe the nature (Real/Virtual) and size (Magnified/Diminished) of the image.
  6. Use the mirror formula: 1/f = 1/v + 1/u to calculate focal length.

Precautions

  • The mirror and screen should be at the same height.
  • The object should be well illuminated.
  • Take all distance measurements from the pole of the mirror.

Lab Report

Aim: To determine the focal length of a concave mirror by obtaining the image of a distant object and observing image formation at different object distances.
